Papanasam Beach

The Papanasam Beach also known as Varkala Beach is renowned for a natural spring, which is considered to have medicinal as well as therapeutic properties. A dip in the holy waters of this beach is believed by many to purge the body of its impurities and the soul of its sins; hence the name ‘Papanasam’ which translates to ‘the destruction of sins’. The beach also offers seasonal leisure and adventure activities such as boat riding, parasailing, jetting etc.

Varkala Cliff

Varkala cliff is a red laterite formation standing majestically on Papanasam Beach. Also called the Varkala Formation, it is a geological monument as recorded by the Geological Survey of India. It is the 27th national geographical monument in India and the second in the state after the Angadipuram Laterite in the Malappuram district. The cliff walkway provides an opportunity to explore this magnificent creation of nature.

Cliff Shopping and Dining

The cliff walkway and the locality are studded with shops big and small where you could indulge yourself in a little holiday shopping. Stores provide local arts and crafts, memorabilia, clothing, books and so much more waiting to be explored. The area also presents an impressive array of restaurants, cafes and eateries which serve delicious local food as well as other cuisines.

Sivagiri

The Sivagiri Mutt is one among the holiest sites in God’s Own Country. Sivagiri is a pilgrimage centre in Varkala where the Samadhi of Sree Narayana Guru lies. It is said that Sree Narayana Guru himself fell in love with the overall ambience of Varkala and decided to build a hermitage atop the Sivagiri Hill. The Sivagiri Mutt was build in 1904, this is where the pilgrim centre we see today lie. The Sarada Temple built by Guru is famous for its octagonal shape, planned by Guru himself. Thousands of pilgrims in yellow attires visit the Samadhi of the Guru, who propagated his concept, “One Caste, One Religion and One God for Mankind”.

Janardanaswamy Temple

A temple thriving in its rich history, Janardanaswamy Temple also known as the Varkala Temple was originally built around 2000 years ago and its present structure dates back to the 12th century. Pilgrims make their way here to pray to the primary deity of the temple Lord Vishnu, the paintings of Lord Hanuman in various poses in the temple is famous as well. The temple, as believed by the locals, rids one of all ailments and thus is very popular. The history of the temple also attracts visitations.

Fishing Village

The close proximity to the Arabian Sea undoubtedly makes Varkala a fishing village. With a large number of the local residents relying on fishing for their livelihoods, live fishing is an everyday activity. The friendly locals will be more than happy to let you witness their work in action or maybe even to join them and lend a helping hand. As gratitude they often provide a share of the fresh catch and our chef on duty will be delighted to cook up an in-house seafood meal for you.
